How to register a birth in Mallorca
If your baby is born in Mallorca, ask the maternity team before discharge whether the hospital can send the birth declaration to the Spanish Civil Registry. If it can’t, contact the appropriate Civil Registry office promptly. This is the step that creates the Spanish birth record.
Can the hospital register the birth?
A participating hospital can usually send the birth declaration electronically within 72 hours when the case meets the requirements. Ask what each parent needs to sign, how to check that the declaration was sent and how you will receive proof of registration. Keep the hospital paperwork until you have the Civil Registry certificate.
When do you need to go to the Civil Registry?
If the hospital doesn’t send the declaration, the usual deadline to declare the birth is 10 days from birth. The Spanish government says it can extend to 30 days if justified cause is established. Contact the registry early if there was a home birth, there’s a complication with recording parentage or your documents were issued abroad.
Ask the office which documents apply to your family. It may ask for parents’ identification, the medical birth certificate or report and supporting documents for parentage or marriage if relevant. Check whether it needs certified translations, apostilles or both for documents issued abroad.
What to do once the birth is registered
Request a full Spanish birth certificate (certificado literal de nacimiento). For international families, ask your consulate what it requires for nationality or a passport. Spanish nationality follows separate rules and depends on the child’s circumstances. The birth certificate records the birth and parentage details.
If your baby will live in Mallorca, ask your town hall about the municipal register and your health centre or the INSS about recognising healthcare entitlement and arranging a health card and paediatric care. These are separate administrative steps.
