NIE, TIE and residency in Mallorca
Start with your nationality, how long you intend to stay and why you’re moving. A NIE is a foreigner’s identification number. A TIE is a physical card documenting the holder’s status. The EU citizen registration certificate is a separate document for people using the EU registration route.

When you may need a NIE
You may need a NIE for an economic or administrative transaction even if you are not moving to Spain. Check the police’s NIE assignment procedure and what evidence it asks for. If you’re already applying under a residence route, ask whether a NIE will be assigned as part of that process before booking a separate appointment.
EU and non-EU routes
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals intending to live in Spain for more than three months should check the EU registration requirements and apply within the relevant deadline. The ministry says the registration application is made within three months of entry. Evidence depends on your circumstances, such as work, study or sufficient resources and healthcare cover.
If you are using a non-EU residence route, confirm the underlying visa or permission first. The TIE is generally the document you apply for once the relevant status has been granted or you have entered on an applicable visa. Deadlines and documents vary. Non-EU family members of EU nationals and people protected by the UK Withdrawal Agreement can have distinct routes.
Before booking an appointment
Find the exact trámite in the official appointment system. Check the current form, fee, passport requirements and whether the office wants fingerprints, photos or originals. Keep the grant decision and any filing receipt. Ask the relevant authority if you are unsure which appointment to choose.
