Can I work remotely from Mallorca? Spain’s digital nomad route explained

You can work remotely from Mallorca if you have the right to work in Spain. If you’re moving from outside the EU, EEA or Switzerland and need permission to live and work here, Spain’s international teleworking route, often called the digital nomad route, may fit. Start with where your employer or clients are based and whether you work as an employee or as a freelancer.

Official guidance and links checked 7 November 2026.

What’s the difference for employees and freelancers?

Your work What to check
Employee Under this route, you can work for employers based outside Spain. You’ll need evidence of the existing employment relationship and the employer’s permission to work remotely from Spain.
Freelancer You’ll need to show an existing professional relationship with one or more businesses abroad. Work for businesses based in Spain can account for up to 20% of your total professional activity under this route.

The law requires at least three months of the relevant employment or professional relationship before applying. It also sets conditions around qualifications or professional experience and the business you work with. Read Articles 74 bis to 74 quinquies of Spain’s international teleworking law.

Where do I apply for Spain’s digital nomad visa?

If you’re applying from abroad, check the Spanish consulate responsible for where you live. If you’re already in Spain lawfully, the law provides for an application for a residence authorisation through Spain’s Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit, known as the UGE. Check the documents and the procedure for your situation before booking travel. See the UGE’s official teleworking checklist and FAQs.

What should I check before agreeing a move?

If you’re employed, ask your employer who will handle the Spanish Social Security and payroll questions before you agree a start date. Freelancers should check the Social Security documents and registration that apply to them. An overseas certificate may be accepted in some cases under an applicable agreement. Read the UGE’s Social Security FAQ.

Check tax residence separately. Spain looks at factors including time spent here and where your main economic interests are based. If you’ll be working across two countries, ask an adviser who handles cross-border cases to check how the rules apply to you. See Spain’s tax residence criteria.
