Arrels at La Lonja de Palma: What to Know Before You Visit

One of Palma’s most iconic historic buildings has been transformed into one of Mallorca’s standout cultural experiences of 2026.

Arrels, a major installation by internationally acclaimed German artist Katharina Grosse, is now open at La Lonja de Palma and will remain on view until 31 January 2027.

Presented by the Govern de les Illes Balears in collaboration with Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma, the exhibition brings contemporary art into direct conversation with one of the city’s most atmospheric Gothic landmarks.

What is Arrels?

Inside La Lonja, Katharina Grosse has created an immersive installation that changes the way visitors experience the building.

The work combines painting, architecture and natural materials, including mounds of earth and a large uprooted tree, partly buried and transformed through colour. The result is a striking, sensory landscape that feels both unexpected and completely rooted in the space around it.

Grosse is known for taking painting far beyond the canvas, often using intense colour across buildings, landscapes and objects. In Arrels, her intervention responds directly to the scale, history and architectural drama of La Lonja, inviting visitors to move through the work and see the space from new angles.

As this is a temporary exhibition, it is worth checking the official opening times before visiting, especially around public holidays, institutional events or special programming.

Who is Katharina Grosse?

Katharina Grosse was born in Freiburg, Germany, and is recognised as one of the most influential contemporary artists working today.

Her work has been shown at major international institutions and events, including Centre Pompidou-Metz, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MoMA PS1 in New York and the Venice Biennale.

With Arrels, she brings one of her ambitious site-specific installations to Mallorca, using La Lonja’s historic architecture as both setting and subject.

Why visit?

La Lonja is already one of Palma’s most impressive buildings, but Arrels offers a completely different way to experience it.

The exhibition is not simply something to look at. It is something to walk through, respond to and feel. It shows how contemporary art can reframe a historic space, making visitors notice the building’s proportions, textures and atmosphere in a new way.

For anyone looking for cultural things to do in Palma, contemporary art in Mallorca or a memorable visit in the city centre, Arrels at La Lonja de Palma is one of the essential exhibitions of the season.
