Community Skillshare Mallorca: Learn, Teach and Connect in Llucmajor

What do basic car maintenance, Japanese stitching, medicinal plants, intuitive singing and homemade chocolate spread have in common?

They are among the practical and creative subjects being shared at the next Community Skillshare in Mallorca, taking place in the Llucmajor countryside on Saturday, 24 October 2026.

Organised by Curious Experiences, the day will bring people of all ages together to exchange knowledge, learn something useful and enjoy the experience of being part of a welcoming community.

At the heart of the event is one simple idea: everybody knows something worth sharing.

What is the Community Skillshare?

The Community Skillshare is a day of informal workshops led by members of the community.

Participants do not need to be experts, professional teachers or experienced public speakers. They simply need to know the basics of something that could be useful, interesting or enjoyable for another person.

It might be a practical household skill, a creative technique, a recipe, a form of movement or a piece of knowledge gained through work, family life or personal experience.

Some participants will lead a 50-minute workshop before spending the rest of the day learning from others. Some will join the volunteer team, while others will attend purely to take part in the sessions.

“You don’t have to know everything about a skill,” explains organiser Serafine Klarwein. “You just need to know the basics and be able to share them.”

How the idea began

The idea grew from a conversation between Serafine and her cousin. Both had followed the higher education route but later recognised that there were many practical aspects of everyday life they had never been taught.

“We had no practical life skills,” Serafine says. “Things that are so necessary, like cooking, using tools and parenting.”

Their original plan was to create a book containing clear, condensed information about essential skills. The subject quickly became too large for a single publication, but the problem led them towards a more interesting solution.

Rather than trying to record all that knowledge in a book, why not bring people together and allow them to share it directly?

Curious Experiences now organises two Community Skillshares each year. The spring gathering generally explores a particular subject, with previous themes including women, activism and art. The autumn event concentrates on practical, creative and everyday life skills.

More than 150 skills already shared

More than 150 different skills have been explored during previous Community Skillshares.

Workshops have covered composting, growing food, self-defence, conscious parenting, manga drawing, writing haiku and conscious sexuality. One memorable session, led by teenagers, was called “How to Train Your Parents” and explored family communication from the young people’s perspective.

The variety is part of the appeal. Several workshops take place during each session, allowing visitors to choose the subjects that interest them most.

For co-organiser Tracy Courtney, the value lies not only in learning from someone else. Teaching can also deepen the facilitator’s understanding of their own knowledge.

Explaining a familiar process requires people to slow down, identify each stage and think about something they might usually do instinctively. The exchange therefore benefits both teacher and learner.

What can you learn at the October event?

The programme for October includes a mixture of practical, creative and reflective workshops.

Confirmed subjects include:

  • Basic car maintenance
  • Harvesting and curing olives
  • Identifying medicinal plants found in Mallorca
  • Turning an old T-shirt into a reusable bag
  • Preparing a healthy, protein-rich chocolate spread
  • Making kites
  • Using collage for self-reflection
  • Intuitive group singing
  • Sashiko stitching (Sashiko is a traditional Japanese form of functional and decorative stitching. Its slow, rhythmic nature can also make it a calming, meditative activity.)

The intuitive singing workshop will draw on improvisational techniques associated with musician Bobby McFerrin. Participants will be encouraged to listen, experiment and create sound together, without needing previous singing experience.

At the time of the interview the organisers were still interested in hearing from people who could share self-defence, basic bicycle repairs, digital technology, DIY or clothes-mending skills.

As Tracy points out, people often undervalue knowledge that feels ordinary to them. However, knowing how to repair a bicycle, sew on a button, use a tool or check something under the bonnet of a car could save another person time, money and frustration.

Children can be teachers too

Children and young people are not only welcome to attend. They are actively encouraged to share their own skills.

Curious Experiences believes children can be excellent teachers and wants younger participants to recognise the value of their knowledge.

They do not need to plan a complete 50-minute workshop. A child can lead a five-minute demonstration of a quick, easy-to-learn skill.

It could be a drawing technique, a simple craft, a playground game, a dance move or something they have recently learned themselves. The important message is that knowledge does not only pass from adults to children. Everyone can contribute, regardless of age.

What happens during the day?

The Community Skillshare will begin at 11 am with a welcome circle. The organisers will explain how the day works, and each facilitator will briefly introduce their session.

Several workshops will run simultaneously. Participants will separate into smaller groups for each session and then reconvene before the next round begins.

Volunteers will greet visitors, answer questions and help newcomers find their way. Particular care is taken to make people arriving alone feel comfortable and included.

Workshops may be delivered in English, Spanish or Catalan, depending on the facilitator. Many sessions become naturally bilingual as participants help one another with translation.

The event will take place in gardens in the Llucmajor countryside, with full location and arrival information provided after registration.

Food and a community exchange

Healthy homemade food and coffee will be available at affordable prices throughout the day. Visitors may also bring their own food, although the organisers ask everyone to avoid single-use plastic and use reusable containers.

There will also be an open exchange area where visitors can bring clothes, books, plants, artwork, tools, toys and other useful items.

It is not a strict one-for-one swap. People may take something they need even if they have not brought an item themselves. Anything remaining at the end of the event will be donated or passed to someone who can reuse it.

Supporting Fundación Gotas

Proceeds from the Community Skillshare will support Fundación Gotas, a grassroots humanitarian initiative led by Venezuelan singer Liana Malva.

The initiative works with Indigenous communities in the Venezuelan Amazon, where mining activity has created serious social and environmental challenges. Its longer-term aims include improving access to education and helping communities develop autonomous local economies.

Following a recent earthquake, Liana has also been organising emergency aid and distribution routes. Fundación Gotas received a lorry carrying four tonnes of essential supplies from Mérida, which are being distributed among identified communities.

The initiative has no dedicated funding, and volunteers have been covering the cost of transporting supplies themselves. Money raised through the Community Skillshare will help support this work.
